Seeking Sleep: Acupuncture Points for Insomnia
Insomnia in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is very interesting. In fact, somewhat unexpectedly, it almost always is attributed to a heart problem. Put in terms of our modern age, sleeplessness is linked with either cardiomyopathies or coronary vascular diseases such as arteriosclerosis, atherosclerosis, and vasospasms.
All three of these coronary artery problems restrict blood flow into the heart wall. When this happens, a person simply cannot fall into a deep sleep. In Western medicine, the drugs that are provided to induce sleep such as Ambien, Lunesta, and Trazodone are just manipulating brain chemistry and do not actually address the fundamental cause of insomnia.
How to treat insomnia with acupuncture
With our approach, we try to get to the source of the issue and address it from there. As noted, what we find is that the real source for trouble sleeping is typically an issue with the heart. TCM, whether it’s acupuncture or Chinese herbs, can be used to vasodilate the coronary arteries, push more blood into the heart wall, and de-swell swollen atherosclerotic coronary vessels.
